Applications are due to the Fellowship Secretary by the stated deadline. The design competition brief will emphasize issues of resource sustainability as integral aspects of architectural design. The design competition starts at 5:00 pm PST on the Thursday of the charrette weekend and continues until 5:00 pm PST of the following Tuesday. The competition program is to be downloaded and the finished submissions uploaded by applicants on the web site at www.cavinfellowship.org. Candidates can work on the competition anywhere they choose. The design competition is absolutely an individual effort.
The selection jury is to be designated by the Fellowship Secretary and may include Pasadena & Foothill AIA Scholarship Committee members, Cal Poly Pomona and University of Oregon Architecture faculty, and other practitioners.
During the first phase of the selection process 4 to 6 finalists will be selected. Finalists will be required to submit 20” x 20” presentation boards of their project design for the final review without modifications. Local finalists must attend the final jury at their own expense. Non-local finalists must attend the final jury and will be reimbursed $200 toward their expenses when submitted before April 1.
All competitors will be sent the names of the finalists after the first review. Finalists will participate in a full and open discussion (with the jury and Fund representatives only) of their design ideas and project concepts. Additionally, they will be asked about their travel-study plans and what they believe can be accomplished through this opportunity. Final travel-study plans and itineraries are not required at this time, but a theme or intent is. The jury will select a winner, who will then officially be designated that years Cavin Scholar by the Fund. An alternate will also be designated by the jury. The Fund will invite the finalists to dinner with the jury following completion of the selection process.
